How to Choose Rhythmic Gymnastics Clubs – Complete Guide
How to Choose Rhythmic Gymnastics Clubs
Choosing the correct club size is very important for comfort, technique, and confident performance during training and competitions.
The ideal club length is usually measured from the center of the palm to the middle of the forearm while holding the club by the small head. A slightly longer size (about 2–3 cm longer) may also be comfortable, but the club should not reach the shoulder.
If measuring is not possible, the following general recommendations by age can help:
- Ages 5–8 — 36 cm clubs
- Ages 9–10 — 40–41 cm clubs
- Ages 11 and older — 44–45 cm clubs
However, age is not the only factor. Height, body structure, and skill level should also be considered. Taller gymnasts may feel more comfortable with slightly longer clubs, while smaller gymnasts may prefer shorter clubs even at an older age. Proper sizing makes elements easier to perform and improves overall control.
The weight of the clubs varies depending on their size and material.
Competition Clubs
From the age of 16, gymnasts participating in official competitions are required to use standard 44–45 cm clubs approved by FIG — the International Gymnastics Federation.
Clubs for Beginners
Basic clubs designed for beginner classes and general training are usually available in only two sizes — 36 cm and 45 cm. These clubs are suitable for beginners and recreational training but are generally less precise and comfortable for professional-level work.
Materials and Features
Rhythmic gymnastics clubs are mainly made from plastic or rubber.
In recent years, rubber clubs have become especially popular because of their comfortable grip, softer feel, and improved control during throws and catches. Many gymnasts feel more confident learning difficult elements with rubber clubs.
Plastic clubs are usually firmer and are often considered a more basic training option.
